Eating big bowl feasts has been a household way of hailing a better life among Cantonese communities for centuries. Nowadays, residents in Gongming Subdistrict are carrying on this tradition.

Ornamented with soy sauce, fermented red bean curd and bean sauce, eight dishes, namely, roast goose, chicken, braised pork belly, pigskin, meatballs, mushrooms, dried bean curd sticks and carrots, are layered in a big porcelain or stainless-steel basin and served as a banquet attended by all residents in a community. The feast is usually endowed with a blessing for fortune and unity among families and neighborhoods.

Big bowl feasts are also popular in the Songgang and Shajin communities of Bao’an District.
