On May 25, the banks of the Maozhou River in Guangming District came alive with the booming sounds of gongs, drums, and cheering crowds as the annual community dragon boat race kicked off in spectacular fashion.

The event, blending traditional sport, local culture, and mass participation, drew widespread enthusiasm from residents across the district.

Eighteen dragon boat teams gathered at the Shenzhen Diving Water Sports Center in Guangming to compete on the water. After a thrilling race that tested strength and teamwork, the Jiazitang Community Dragon Boat Team emerged victorious, taking home the day's top honors.

The opening ceremony featured a spectacular performance by the Guangming Lion Dance Troupe alongside the "little lions" — a group of five-year-olds from Yuefu Kindergarten. Their lively lion dance brought a fresh, youthful energy to the centuries-old tradition, symbolizing the passing down of cultural heritage from one generation to the next. This heartfelt collaboration set a vibrant, locally flavored tone for the races that followed.

This year's race marked a significant milestone with the number of participating teams rising from 14 last year to 18. The lineup included seasoned veteran teams as well as newcomers making their debut.

Among them was the "Lisonglang 1436 Dragon Boat Team," participating for the first time with deep roots tracing back nearly 600 years to when their ancestors first settled in the area. Their involvement infused the competition with profound cultural significance. Another highlight was the "Yutang Community Girls' Team," the only all-female crew, competing for a second consecutive year. Their powerful paddling embodied the spirit of modern female empowerment.

The entire event was broadcast live with professional commentators guiding viewers through the excitement of the races. Special guest Chen Ying, former chairman of the Guangming District Federation of Literary and Art Circles, shared fascinating stories about each community team's unique dragon boat legacy. Her insights allowed audiences to appreciate the deep connections between dragon boat culture and Guangming's rich local history.
