The Shenzhen Science & Technology Museum has reached a major milestone: after opening its doors on May 1, the museum welcomed its 1-millionth visitor on July 30.
To mark the occasion, the museum hosted a special celebration, where the 1-millionth visitor, a young child named Xie Jiaxiao, shared her excitement: “Here, you can both have fun and learn new things.”
Since its launch, the museum has quickly become one of Shenzhen's most popular destinations, especially during the summer holiday season. Its 24 permanent exhibition zones feature 950 interactive exhibits, spanning topics from space exploration to smart industries. In response to increased demand, the museum has extended its daily opening hours and rolled out free daily educational activities along with a suite of thoughtful visitor services.
Built around the theme "Digital Civilization · Innovation · Future," the museum focuses on communication technology as its core. It is divided into seven key functional zones, including exhibition areas, science cinemas, innovation labs, public engagement spaces, and outdoor science areas.
To meet the needs of families and young visitors during the summer holiday, the museum has introduced a temporary VR exhibition hall, increased exhibit rotation with free and paid special exhibits, and launched eight themed educational programs in partnership with leading tech firms and research institutions such as iFLYTEK, BGI Group, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Jellyfish Planet Lab.
As of July 30, more than 3,000 young participants had taken part in these research programs, museum staff member Huo Zhixin told Shenzhen Daily.
The museum has also attracted a lot of international visitors, many of whom were impressed by Shenzhen's technological innovation.
Janandi Oshadi Sri Ranasinghe from Sri Lanka marveled at the brainwave-powered flower exhibit, saying, “It's so amazing… This museum, it's just a road to the future.”
Juan Guerra from Ecuador added, “This museum is amazing because it's interactive. You have many games, and you can see how technology works.”
Jessica Theodora from Indonesia said, “This museum really reflects Shenzhen—it's innovative, digital, and full of advanced technology.”
