The Greek National Opera will bring its acclaimed production of La Traviata to Guangming District in Shenzhen, giving local audiences an opportunity to enjoy one of the world's most beloved operas.

Even those unfamiliar with opera are likely to recognize some of the melodies in La Traviata. Composed by Italian master Giuseppe Verdi and inspired by French novelist Alexandre Dumas fils' La Dame aux Camélias (The Lady of the Camellias), the opera premiered in March 1853 and has since become one of the most frequently performed works worldwide.

For Chinese audiences, the piece carries particular significance: it was the first Western opera staged in China after the founding of the People's Republic.

The story follows the doomed romance between Parisian courtesan Violetta and young bourgeois Alfredo. Violetta gives up her glittering life for love, but their happiness is cut short when Alfredo's father, Giorgio Germont, urges her to sacrifice their relationship to preserve his family's honor. Misunderstandings and heartbreak ensue, culminating in Violetta's tragic death just as Alfredo arrives too late with his reconciliation.

Founded in 1939, the Greek National Opera is Greece's only opera house and a cornerstone of the country's cultural life. Its Shenzhen appearance marks its debut in China, with nearly 150 performers—including chorus, orchestra, and ballet—bringing the production to life.

The staging is directed by Lukas Karytinos, with lighting design by Christos Tziogkas and stage, set, and costume design by Nikos Petropoulos. The production also commemorates the 130th anniversary of Alexandre Dumas fils' death.
