Acclaimed French pianist David Fray, one of the most dazzling figures in the world of classical music, will perform a piano recital at the Guangming Culture & Art Center on Oct. 26.

The concert will invite audiences on a philosophical and emotional journey through Fray's profound interpretations.

The 'Rescue Hero' comes to Shenzhen

Fray, celebrated for his interpretations of music ranging from Bach to Boulez, is known for both his solo and chamber performances in world-renowned concert halls. Recently, he made headlines as a “savior” in the classical world when he stepped in at the last minute for a major performance.

On Sept. 9, at London's Wigmore Hall, a concert originally scheduled for baritone Matthias Goerne and pianist Maria João Pires was suddenly disrupted when Pires fell ill. Fray took the stage in her place, delivering an exceptional performance that won enthusiastic praise from audiences and critics alike. Wigmore Hall confirmed the lineup change and publicly thanked Fray for his elegant rescue.

After his triumph in London, Fray now brings that same depth and grace to Shenzhen, promising an unforgettable musical experience for local audiences.

From BBC Newcomer of the Year to Opus Klassik Award winner

Fray first captured international attention in 2008 with his debut album “Bach Suites and Boulez Works,” which stunned the music world. The London Times and Evening Standard both named it “Record of the Year,” while BBC Music Magazine crowned him Newcomer of the Year, followed by Germany's ECHO Klassik Award for Best Recording.

His “Fantasie” album of Schubert's late piano works was selected as Editor's Choice by Gramophone and hailed by Sinfini Music as “one of the most captivating listening experiences of our time.”

In 2021, Fray received the Opus Klassik Award for Innovative Concert of the Year for his groundbreaking collaboration with the Hamburg Ballet on Schubert's Ghost Light.

“The emotional depth and variety in Schubert’s music were expressed with remarkable sensitivity by David Fray,” wrote Seeing Dance, a U.K.-based performing arts publication.

A lifelong bond with Bach

Bach has always held a special place in Fray's repertoire. The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris hosted his Bach Series, featuring the Goldberg Variations, as well as double, triple, and quadruple piano concertos, which Fray both performed and conducted. He also collaborated with violinist Renaud Capuçon on Bach's violin sonatas.

“Fray is the star of this recording,” Gramophone wrote. “His partner Capuçon brings silky tone and warmth, but it's Fray's insight into Bach's unpredictable harmonies and flowing lines that truly astonishes — every artistic choice reveals both sincerity and intellect.”

A must-see musical event in Shenzhen

With his poetic touch and philosophical artistry, Fray is set to bring the magic of European classical music to Shenzhen this October. His concert at the Guangming Culture & Art Center promises not only a performance of stunning beauty but also a reflection of how music can inspire empathy, depth, and renewal in every listener.
