When cheers of victory echoed from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a new chapter opened in the history of China’s BMX freestyle.
On November 8, at the 2025 UCI BMX Freestyle World Championships, three Chinese riders — Sun Sibei, Sun Jiaqi and Fan Xiaotong — swept the gold, silver and bronze medals, raising three national flags above the podium and signaling China’s breakthrough on the global stage.
A closer look reveals that their path to glory was paved in Guangming District. Just half a month earlier, the BMX freestyle competition of the 15th National Games, held at Hongqiao Park, had served as the springboard that propelled these athletes to world-class success.
Four years ago, after taking bronze at the 14th National Games, Sun Sibei told her coach, “Next time, I’m bringing home gold.” In October, she kept her promise, dominating the National Games and claiming the championship.
Just a week before the Games, Sun was knocked unconscious in a training accident. “It was a serious fall,” she recalled. “When I woke up, I had only one thought: I’ve trained too hard for too long. I can’t miss this opportunity.” She recovered, returned to the course, and won the title.
After securing her National Games gold, Sun set her sights on the upcoming world championships. “I’ve taken silver twice in the past two years,” she said. “This time, I want to bring home the champion’s trophy.”
And she did.
At the 2025 UCI World Championships, Sun delivered a nearly flawless run — smooth line choices, high-difficulty trick combinations, exceptional amplitude, and stable landings. She executed a 720-degree spin, a backflip, and the signature “dragon tail” maneuver with precision, earning 95.86 points, the highest score of the competition. Her win not only ended a six-year American winning streak but also secured China’s first-ever world championship gold in women’s BMX freestyle.
Guangming continues to serve as a training ground for athletes pursuing international success. This December, the China Cycling Association will host eight cycling events nationwide, two of which will take place in Guangming — the China BMX Freestyle League (Shenzhen–Guangming stop) and the Tour of Shenzhen Guangming International Road Cycling Race — reinforcing the district’s growing reputation as a hub for elite cycling competitions.
