The Fifth Frontiers of Brain Science and Industry Conference and the 2025 Shenzhen Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Expo opened recently in Guangming Science City, bringing together more than 800 attendees from academia, industry and the investment sector to showcase the latest research and industrial applications.

The conference, held alongside the expo, featured the release of a series of innovative achievements in brain science and BCI technology, as organizers highlighted efforts to deepen the integration of scientific research and industrial development.

Often described as a frontier in understanding human cognition and biology, brain science and brain-computer interface technology have gained strategic importance amid a new wave of global technological and industrial transformation, with governments and companies ramping up investment in the field.

During the event, organizers released the "Science and Technology for Good Initiative on Brain Science and Brain-Computer Interface Development." The initiative calls for prioritizing safety, ethics and long-term social value as prerequisites for innovation. It outlines principles including people-centered development, privacy protection, fairness and inclusion, forward-looking risk assessment, and environmentally conscious design across the integration of industry, academia, research, investment and medical practice.

The conference also marked the launch of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Brain Science and Central Nervous System Disease AI Innovation Alliance. The alliance is led by Luye Life Sciences Group and the Shenzhen Industry Innovation Center for Brain Science and Technology, and includes 20 institutions from research, industry and healthcare.

The alliance aims to support basic research, disease diagnosis, drug development and clinical translation in brain science and central nervous system disorders. It will focus on three areas: neurological drug innovation, brain-computer interfaces, brain health and medical applications, with the goal of building a complete innovation chain from research to industrial application.

A 1.16 billion yuan (US$160 million) brain science industry fund was also announced, with initial investment agreements signed at the event. In addition, the Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology and the Shenzhen Society for Neuroscience signed a strategic cooperation agreement during the event.
