Shenzhen proposed to build a batch of new universities, according to the city’s 14th Five-Year Plan on education development released recently.

According to the plan, Shenzhen aims to get approvals for the official establishment of Shenzhen Institute of Design and Innovation, Shenzhen Ocean University, Shenzhen University of Technology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Shenzhen Conservatory of Music and the University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, from the Ministry of Education by 2025.

Shenzhen Ocean University, located at Baguang area in Dapeng New Area, is expected to enroll students this year under the operation of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). Nearly 65 hectares of land area will be reserved for the university's construction, with its project's total investment reaching 4.8 billion yuan (US$0.76 billion).

It is said that the location of Shenzhen Ocean University, which is close to the national deep sea research expedition center, will benefit the two institutions' mutual development.

Shenzhen Institute of Design and Innovation was built based on SUSTech’s School of Design. It is anticipated to enroll 800 students by 2024, according to the school's official website.

Jointly established by the Shenzhen Municipal Government and the CAS, the new CAS Shenzhen University of Technology in Guangming District was constructed based on the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT) of CAS. The university aims to be the leading national scientific institution in natural sciences and high-tech development in China.

At the end of 2018, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-SZ) was entrusted by the city authorities to build the Shenzhen Conservatory of Music.
