Located in Biyan Old Village near Dengzhanwo Ridge in Guangming Subdistrict, the Mai Family Ancient Tombs can be reached by a wide cement road that runs through Biyan Old Village. At the entrance stands an ancestral tomb management building.
The site features a large green parking area with space for 10 buses and 150 cars, surrounded by well-kept sidewalks and lush greenery. Passing beneath the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed railway tunnel, visitors encounter a memorial arch inscribed with “Legacy of the Nation's Glory” and “Mai Family Ancient Tombs Epitaph.”
An imposing 8-meter-wide marble staircase leads up, reminiscent of Nanjing's Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with rare flowers, pines, and cypresses, imparting a solemn yet refreshing atmosphere.
The tomb cluster consists of six tombs arranged on six terraces to form the Chinese character "品", covering around 2,500 square meters, including worship terraces, sacrificial platforms, tomb halls, and protective walls. Underground tombs measure roughly 11.9 by 9.3 meters. Historical records indicate construction began during the Yuan Dynasty, with restoration in the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, preserving architectural styles from the Yuan and Ming dynasties such as blue brick walls, rammed earth terraces, and Ming Dynasty red sandstone foundations.
Despite regular ancestral rites during Qingming Festival since the Qing Dynasty, the site suffered neglect and accessibility problems due to overgrown vegetation and poor roads.
In 2005, collective efforts led to the tomb cluster's designation as a protected cultural relic site in Bao'an District.
In 2008, to accommodate the construction of the railway that runs adjacent to the tombs, descendants agreed to relocate the eleventh-generation ancestor's tomb within the site. Funding was secured from the railway construction company for landscaping, road improvement, drainage, and visitor facilities.
Nearby are scenic spots including Biyan Reservoir, Guangming Golf Course, and Guangming Grass Skiing Field, enhancing the area's picturesque setting.
