Guangming District released its top 10 events in 2023, the official Shenzhen Guangming WeChat account reported.
1. Large scientific facilities
Large scientific facilities for synthetic biology research, brain analysis and brain simulation, and material genome were officially put into use. On Aug. 3, the Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation (SMART) and the Shenzhen Bay Laboratory (SZBL) kicked off the construction for the integrated permanent site in Guangming Science City, serving a key role in Shenzhen’s development of a pilot demonstration area.
2. More science and technology institutes
The Guangming Institute of Advanced Research of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech)and the Guangming Biomedical Innovation Center were put into use.
The economic development of scientific research is gaining momentum, and the National Biomanufacturing Industry Innovation Center has been approved for construction, becoming the first national-level industrial innovation center in Shenzhen.
The district has taken the lead in introducing special incentive policies for overseas talent recruitment, introducing over 20 academician teams, more than 2,000 high-level talents, and more than 180,000 talents in various fields.
3. National Top 100
Guangming District was selected as one of the Top 100 National Industrial Districts in 2023 (17th), the Top 100 Innovation List of CCID in 2023 (24th), and the Top 100 Science City List (15th).
In the first three quarters, the regional GDP was 111.32 billion yuan (US$15.67 billion), up 8.4% year on year.The added value of industrial enterprises above designated size increased by 7.8%, and the total retail sales of consumer goods reached 20 billion yuan, an increase of 14.1%.
4. Legislation for the construction of science city
On June 1, 2023, the first special legislation for the construction of a science city in China, the Regulations on the Development of Guangming Science City in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, was officially implemented, providing a strong legal guarantee for the construction and development of Guangming Science City.
5. Guangming Science City Forum
On April 27 and 28, 2023, the first Guangming Science City Forum was held, attracting the participation of 35 academicians from home and abroad and over 3,000 processionals.
The forum attracted hundreds of domestic and foreign media platforms, with a total global readership exceeding 1 billion people, further enhancing Guangming Science City's international reputation and influence.
6. Benchmarking projects
In 2023, 727 new projects were introduced, including 12 projects of global top 500 companies and 27 listed companies, 19 projects of Central and State-owned enterprises, 33 high-quality foreign-funded projects, and a large number of domestic and foreign benchmarking projects and high-quality enterprises such as GE, Haier Group, Siemens, Zhongbing Intelligent, and Veolia, a French water and waste management company.
7. Industrial clusters
The district has been accelerating the cultivation and expansion of the "8+5" key industrial clusters. Among them, the scale of industrial clusters in ultra-high-definition video display, new materials, and intelligent terminals have exceeded 100 billion yuan each; while the scale of the high-end medical equipment industrial cluster has exceeded 50 billion yuan. The synthetic biology industrial cluster has a total valuation of over 27 billion yuan, and the strategic emerging industry has increased by more than 60%.
The number of industrial enterprises above designated size and national high-tech enterprises in the district both exceeded 2,000, with 32 listed companies, 751 specialized, innovative and new enterprises, and 56 "small giant" enterprises.
8. High-quality living area
A total of 16,700 new public school admissions were added throughout the year. The construction of the Guangming branch of the Shenzhen Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine was completed, and the International Medical Center of the Seventh Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University was put into use.
Over 11,000 units of affordable housing were supplied in the district, an increase of 10% yearonyear. A total of 40 roads were opened to traffic, further upgrading regional transportation. Fourteen new parks were built and opened to the public.
9. Grassroots governance
The Guangming model of grassroots governance won the 2023 National Social Governance Typical Case Award, and the district's 500-meter Social Psychological Service Circle won the 2023 National Social Governance Innovation Case Award.
10. Cultural events
Guangming hosted the China International New Media Short Film Festival, attracting participants from 124 countries and regions.
The district held two outdoor music festivals, namely the first Guangming Garden Music Festival and the Autumn Overture Concert, attracting over 1.4 million people online and offline.
Several high-level events were also held, including the Guangming International Road Cycling Race, the Guangming Science City Super League Equestrian Invitational Tournament, the Guangming Science City Rowing Challenge, and the ITF International Tennis Masters.
The National Mountain Bike Team Training Base was officially settled in Guangming.
